Acheson Named SCTE ‘Member of the Year’

DENVER — Bob Acheson, a sales and marketing executive with San Bruno Cable TV of Sunnyvale, Calif., was named the SCTE “Member of the Year” last Tuesday (Sept. 23) during Cable-Tec Expo’s annual awards luncheon.

Acheson, honored as the SCTE member who made the most significant contributions to the society over the past year, was recognized for organizing and directing SCTE Vendor Days and community outreach events, publishing chapter newsletters and providing mentoring to less seasoned industry professionals.

Acheson, an SCTE member since 1995, was surprised by the honor. “Those of you who know me know that I am rarely at a loss for words,” he said. “But I certainly am today.” SCTE also named three new members to its Hall of Fame: J. Richard “Dick” Beard, director of global engineering with Ervin Cable; John T. Kurpinski Sr., vice president of Tarpon Communications; and Leslie W. Read, owner of Read Broadband Services.

“I’ve always wanted to have more ribbons than Ron Hranac,” Read said in accepting his award. “Today is the day.”

Hranac, a cable-engineering vet now with Cisco who presented this year’s Hall of Fame class (and who himself was inducted in 2010), is known for the prodigious length of his name-badge ribbons.

Also recognized at Tuesday’s luncheon was Sherita Ceasar, vice president, national video deployment engineering at Comcast Cable, who received the annual Women in Technology Award, sponsored by Bright House Networks and presented jointly by the SCTE, Women in Cable Telecommunications and CableFax.
