Sundance Serves Festival Favorites

Cable Operators To Deliver Customized VOD, Broadband Content In January

By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 12/10/2007 3:53:00 AM

Six cable operators will have 10 titles to titillate local indie film fans, part of a special film festival package compiled by the Sundance Channel.

The video-on-demand package is part of the channel’s celebration of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and is incremental to the 31 independent films that will be cablecast on the channel. Four of the VOD titles will be offered in high-definition.

Each film is preceded by an introduction from Sundance Film Festival director Geoff Gilmore, in which he discusses what is unique about the particular title and reveals why it was selected for the festival.

The participating operators: Bright House Networks, Charter Communications, Comcast Corp., Cox Communications, Mediacom Communications and Time Warner Cable.

The “Festival Favorites” package will be offered throughout January.

“We have found that free VOD is a great way for viewers to sample Sundance Channel programming and drive them back to the linear channel,” said Tim Boell, Sundance Channel senior vice president of affiliate sales.

Films in the package include Down to the Bone, Live-in Maid and Eve & the Fire Horse.

Operators also have access to exclusive customized content for their broadband sites, including streaming video packages with Gilmore-hosted introductions and customized promotional spots; digitized clips and photos from each film; Sundance Channel's “Classic Festival Moments”: short video highlights moments from Sundance Film Festivals past featuring the likes of network founder Robert Redford, Jake Gyllenhaal, Al Gore, Parker Posey and Zooey Deschanel; and a “31 Days of Sundance” widget that will be updated daily with new content.

Participating operator broadband sites include Comcast’s “The Fan”, Time Warner Cable’s “Roadrunner,” Cox.net and Charter.net.
