ESPN said the 2006 ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic raised a record $1.1 million in net proceeds for The V Foundation for Cancer Research.
The event was held Tuesday at Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif. Celebrities in attendance included National Basketball Association Hall of Famer Julius "Dr. J" Erving; National Football League Hall of Famer and ESPN commentator Joe Theismann; actor Haley Joel Osmont; 13-year-old golfing phenom Dakoda Dowd; Olympic skier Bode Miller; Motley Crue lead singer Vince Neil; and Hercules TV-series star Kevin Sorbo.
ESPN Classic will air the 2006 ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. (EST).
The V Foundation was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, former North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN commentator.
“We are thrilled to exceed every previous year's fund-raising achievements," Disney Media Networks co-chairman and ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer said in a prepared statement. "This would not be possible without so many celebrities, sponsors and volunteers who are committed to eradicate this disease, which has claimed too many family members and friends.”
