Fox Sports Expands Wireless Play

By Matt Stump -- Multichannel News, 3/14/2005 11:48:00 AM

Fox Sports has expanded its content play in the wireless space, announcing a deal at the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association conference with SmartVideo Technologies Inc. to launch a 24-hour sports-video channel designed for smartphones.

On-demand audio and video from Fox Sports will be made available to 50 million phone users, the companies said.

Content would range from Fox's deals with the National Football League, Major League Baseball and the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing to regional sports coverage. The Fox Sports content is part of SmartVideo's $12.95-per-month basic package.

In other CTIA news, Alcatel said it is joining with Path 1 Network Technologies Inc. to deliver television programs to mobile devices over existing wireless networks. The solution will use Path 1's voice-over-Internet-protocol gateways and Alcatel's network-based mobile-media-software solutions.

And Verizon Communications said its “V Cast” third-generation wireless-broadband-multimedia service was "exceeding expectations," but declined to disclose any subscriber numbers in a press release.

V Cast offers content from NBC, Cable News Network, ESPN, Fox Sports, NBA TV, NASCAR.com, VH1, and E! Entertainment Television, among others.
