NFL Telethon Pulls In $5M

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 9/20/2005 7:50:00 PM

ABC Sports, ESPN and the National Football League figured out a way to make $5 million in just six-and-a-half hours.

Their Hurricane Relief Telethon during an NFL Monday Night Football primetime doubleheader on both networks generated $5 million in pledges that will go toward recovery and rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast region devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Donations will benefit the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund (www.bushclintonkatrinafund.org), which former Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton are leading.

“We are proud of the people of the NFL, ABC and ESPN for coming together in a short time under complex circumstances to make the telethon a success where it counts the most -- raising funds to help others,” ESPN and ABC Sports president and co-chair of Disney Media Networks George Bodenheimer said in a prepared statement.
