Verizon Gets Second N.Y. Franchise

By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 11/29/2005 11:50:00 AM

The village of Nyack, N.Y. has approved a cable franchise for Verizon Communications Inc., its second community agreement in the state.

The board of trustees of the village approved the contract Monday night. Verizon will compete for customers among the estimated 6,700 residents against incumbent Cablevision Systems Corp.

Verizon's first state contract was with Massapequa Park, which was awarded in September. That deal triggered a lawsuit by Cablevision, which claimed that village trustees violated state open-meetings law while negotiating the pact with Verizon. That suit is pending.

The regional Bell operating company is in negotiations with other communities in both Rockland and Westchester counties in New York, and executives said they anticipate "similarly successful negotiations" soon.

In fact, the trustees in South Nyack, N.Y., are concluding the public-hearing process on Verizon's application there Tuesday night, and they could vote on a franchise at that meeting.
