How TNT’s West Ratings Were Won

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 7/26/2005 1:16:00 PM

With the premiere runs of Into the West now history, Turner Network Television is left behind with a legacy totaling some 81 million viewers during its run.

The Steven Spielberg executive-produced six-part limited series, chronicling the nation’s manifest destiny through the eyes of settlers and native Americans, began June 10 and concluded July 24, with multiple airings, including encore editions on the Fourth of July, when TNT took a one-week hiatus from offering a fresh installment.

During its six premiere windows -- 8 p.m.-10 p.m. Friday nights -- Into the West averaged a 3.5 cable household rating (2.9 nationally), topped by the 4.9 driven by the first episode, “Wheel to the Stars.” The six debut episodes averaged 3.18 million households and 4.52 million viewers two-plus.

Among the drama network’s adults 18-49 target audience, Into the West lassoed 1.36 million of those viewers on average and nearly 1.75 million adults 25-54.

The project evinced viewer erosion as the final two premieres, week five’s “Casualties of War” and “Ghost Dance,” were the two lowest-rated entries with 2.9 and 2.7 household averages, respectively.

Still, the July 22 premiere of the finale outdelivered all programs for the night on UPN and The WB Television Network among adults 25-54 (1.35 million), persons two-plus (3.57 million) and households (2.44 million), according to TNT officials.
