Motorola Introduces New Set-Top Line

By Matt Stump -- Multichannel News, 1/3/2006 11:22:00 AM

Motorola Inc. debuted a new lineup of set-top boxes, the “QIP” series, which provide increased functionality over its traditional “DCT” series of set-tops and allow broadband companies the ability to offer Internet-protocol-TV services.

The “QIP6419” is HD-capable and includes dual-tuner watch-and-record capability. The single-tuner HD version of that set-top is the “QIP6200.” The company also announced a “QIP2500” standard-definition single-tuner set-top

Motorola said the new set-tops are the first it has built that to include Multimedia Over Coaxial Alliance home-networking technology, which provides for speeds of up to 100 megabits per second to shift content to different devices in the home.

The QIP set-top line also supports both traditional cable quadrature-amplitude-modulation schemes and IPTV transmission.

Motorola said Verizon Communications Inc. is deploying the QIP set-tops for its Verizon FiOS TV service. Verizon uses QAM technology to deliver linear digital-cable and broadcast networks but IP technology to deliver video-on-demand.
