Sling Media Inc. is now airborne thanks to a new software upgrade to its popular “SlingPlayer” system that will allow customers to see their TV content on “Windows Mobile” smartphones.
San Mateo, Calif.-based Sling has gained quite a buzz with its technology, which allows consumers to tap into their home TVs and digital set-top boxes and view content remotely, via PCs.
A new beta-software update now available for download on Sling’s Web site (www.slingmedia.com) extends that capability to mobile handheld smartphones using the “Windows Mobile Pocket PC 5.0” and “2003 Second Edition” mobile operating systems.
A version for devices based on the “Windows Mobile Smartphone” OS will be released within the next month.
For now, the software is available free in beta form, but starting April 26, it will be offered for $29.99. Customers who have already bought the SlingPlayer device and software for PC viewing before that time can get a free license for the mobile version.
The SlingPlayer system includes a device that connects to a home TV or digital set-top box. It also taps into the customer’s broadband Internet connection and acts as a relay, able to pull a single video stream from live TV and funnel it over the Internet to a PC outside the home.
Adding the same link for cell phones is another step toward making customers’ TV service available anywhere they go, according to cofounder and CEO Blake Krikorian.
"’SlingPlayer Mobile’ delivers the complete home TV experience on any compatible Windows Mobile device and works with your existing Slingbox,” he said.
