History Looks Forward With Web Video

By R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 4/16/2006 8:00:00 PM

The History Channel will take a leap into the future this summer with the launch of a video-rich Web site.

The new version of the History Web site (www.history.com) will feature more than 2,000 video clips and speeches, including behind-the-scenes footage of such shows as True Caribbean Pirates and Desperate Crossing, said History Channel USA president Dan Davids.

In addition, History.com will develop new broadband channels based around historical topics, and revamp its This Day InHistory site. While watching video clips, the network said users will be able to access information such as video timelines, games, podcasts and in-depth articles from the site’s comprehensive online encyclopedia.

History Channel, which plans to place advertising within its video broadband content, believes these vehicles will attract new and younger users.

“Our goal is to touch our viewers and fans wherever and whenever they want it,” he said. “We want to capture a younger audience so we think [the Web site] will help round out the History Channel experience for viewers.”

The network, which will inform advertisers of its broadband gambits during its upfront in New York on April 18, also plans to launch a number of new series and specials later this year aimed at maintaining demographic ratings momentum. During the first quarter, History notched gains against adults 25 to 54 (8%), adults 18 to 49 (6%), males 25 to 54 (8%) and males 18 to 49 (5%) compared to the same period last year. The network’s primetime household rating for the quarter was off 9% to a 1.0.

New shows include Lost Worlds, which will explore and rebuild ancient lost cities like Pompeii using state-of-the-art animation; Engineering An Empire, which will examine the world’s most advanced civilizations from an engineering perspective; Dogfights, which recreates famous air battles; and Ancient Discoveries, which will allow viewers to travel back in time to discover the roots of technologies that are considered modern.
