Comcast Kicks Up ESPN2 HD for World Cup

With the World Cup soccer tournament’s kickoff Friday, Comcast Corp. is hoping to score with fans by debuting ESPN2 HD, a high-definition simulcast of the sports channel.
Comcast will debut ESPN2 HD in several markets, giving soccer fans HD video feeds of the tournament, being hosted by Germany. In a tag-team effort, ESPN HD, ABC HD and ESPN2 HD will jointly provide live coverage of all 64 matches of in the month-long tournament, which culminates with the championship game July 9.
The coverage will include studio programs for pre-match, halftime and post-match segments.
"We're thrilled to expand our leading HDTV lineup with the addition of ESPN2 HD," Comcast executive vice president of content acquisitions Matt Bond said. "Watching events like the World Cup and the NCAA College World Series in crystal-clear HD is the next best thing to being in the stadium for all of the action."
With the addition of the ESPN2 HD feed, Comcast now offers an average of 15-17 HD channels per market, including cable’s Discovery HD, TNT HD and Showtime HD, as well as available local-affiliate HD simulcasts.
