FiOS Lands New Del. TV Franchise

By Karen Brown & David Cohen -- Multichannel News, 6/27/2006 1:44:00 PM

Verizon Communications’ FiOS TV service strengthened its foothold in Delaware, landing a fifth franchise to offer its television service.

The Newark City Council Monday night unanimously approved a video franchise for FiOS TV. Verizon already has franchises for Bellefonte, Delaware City, Odessa and Townsend, and it filed an application with the Delaware Public Service Commission to offer the TV service in unincorporated areas of the state.

Under the 15-year agreement, Verizon will pay Newark franchise fees based on the company's gross revenues collected from cable services.

Information was not released as to when Verizon will start offering Newark residents the TV service, which offers more than 400 video and audio channels, as well as on-demand content from a library of 2,500 titles.

In other Verizon FiOS TV news, the telco debuted the service in Oyster Bay, N.Y., Tuesday, taking orders for the Long Island Town of Oyster Bay, including sections of Massapequa, Seaford, Syosset and Woodbury.

Oyster Bay joins the Long Island Town of Hempstead communities of Baldwin, Bellmore, North Bellmore, Merrick, North Merrick, Roosevelt, Seaford and Wantagh, as well as the Town of Oyster Bay's incorporated village of Massapequa Park, as FiOS TV markets in New York, the regional Bell operating company said.

Verizon also offers FiOS TV in the Rockland County communities of Nyack, South Nyack and Upper Nyack, and it will begin offering the service to other New York communities where it has franchise agreements later this summer, including the Long Island villages of Cedarhurst and Laurel Hollow.
