Verizon Wins Virginia Franchise

By Steve Donohue -- Multichannel News, 6/28/2006 1:30:00 PM

Verizon Communications won a franchise for its Verizon FiOS TV service in Leesburg, Va., where it will take on incumbent operator Adelphia Communications.

The Leesburg Town Council voted unanimously to grant Verizon a franchise Tuesday night. The telco said it expects to begin taking orders for FiOS TV within the next couple of weeks in Leesburg and parts of Loudoun County, where Verizon won a video franchise on June 20.

Leesburg is the 13th town in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area to grant Verizon a franchise.

Comcast is expected to pick up Adelphia’s Leesburg operation after the MSO completes its merger with Time Warner Cable and Comcast.
