Following on the heels of Apple Computer’s recent announcement of its iTV box, online television-video-download provider Akimbo Systems announced that it is now taking orders for its new video player that links the Internet to the TV.
Co-branded and manufactured by electronics giant RCA, the player allows users to draw content downloaded from the Internet to their PCs -- including major motion pictures supplied by online content partner Movielink (www.movielink.com) -- and transfer it to their TV sets for viewing.
The box offers connections to the computer via Ethernet or a wireless 802.11g link, and it can store more than 100 hours of video programming downloaded from Akimbo’s 13,000-title service. It also features full digital-video-recorder functions such as rewind and fast-forward.
As part of its debut, Akimbo is offering the box for $179.99 online (www.akimbo.com). When it debuts at retail outlets, it will sell for $199.99. Viewers must also sign up for a $9.99 monthly subscription to the Akimbo service.
"The unsurpassed collections of Movielink and Akimbo provide a tremendous variety of high-quality programming that can be watched at your convenience,” Akimbo CEO Joshua Goldman said. “To put it simply, this is a completely new way to be entertained in the comfort of the living room."
