The clock is still ticking for Flavor Flav and VH1: The old-school rap artist's Flavor of Love 2 series finale Oct. 15 drew a network-record 7.5 million viewers and a 5.4 household rating, according to Nielsen Media Research data.
The numbers toppled the 4.9 rating and 5.9 million viewer marks set with the March 12 finale of the series' freshman run.
The concluder, in which Flavor Flav picked “Deelishis” as his love match out of 20 contestants, averaged a record 4.6 rating among the advertiser-coveted 18-to-49 demo, said VH1 officials.
“We were happily shocked,” said Michael Hirschorn, executive vice president of programming and production. “I think people just got caught up in the drama of it and [it] really turned into high opera.”
The finale also drew an 18 rating/34 share among all African-American adults 18 to 49 watching TV that evening.
Series co-creator and executive producer Mark Cronin said the show's good humored nature struck a chord with young viewers.
“It's a more accurate reflection of what dating in the real world is like as compared to The Bachelor, which is some sanitized version,” said Cronin. “These people are much more real and go about things in a much more lighthearted way than dating is in the world today.”
Cronin said he's finalizing an offshoot series in which 20 men will vie for the affections of Flavor of Love 2 runner-up contestant “New York.”
He said the spinoff could become even more popular than the original, given that Flavor of Love's audience is primarily female.
As for Flav, Hirschorn said VH1 will explore other opportunities with the rapper, although a third season of Flavor of Love is doubtful.
“There's clearly a mandate here to do more with regard to this format,” he said. “This new twist on competitive reality is something that we feel that there's a lot of life left.”
