Brightcove, a distributor of Internet video, licensed On2 Technologies' VP6 video-compression software, the companies announced Friday.
Brightcove launched a beta version of its video and music portal this week, which features programming from MTV Networks, Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, British Sky Broadcasting and The New York Times, among others.
Brightcove will use the software to encode videos into Abobe Systems' Flash 8 video format. As part of the deal, Brightcove agreed to market and promote On2's Flix Pro desktop video-editing tools for Flash 8 to its content partners.
"On2's VP6 codec provides a high-powered foundation for video encoding that we can trust," Brightcove chief technology officer Bob Mason said in a prepared statement. "Quality and playback performance are linchpins for our business, and we are happy to have a partner like On2 that can deliver."
