Starz Forms Studio

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 11/13/2006 12:53:00 PM

Starz announced the formation of Overture Films, a new motion-picture studio that will produce, acquire and distribute 8-12 full-length feature films per year.

Overture is a wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Media’s Starz unit, parent of premium-TV division Starz Entertainment and production and distribution arm Starz Media.

The studio will be headed by CEO Chris McGurk and chief operating officer Danny Rosett. McGurk and Rossett both held executive titles at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer before that studio was sold to an investor group led by Sony. McGurk most recently served as senior advisor, new ventures for Starz Media.

“Overture is the keystone for the new structure at Starz,” Starz chairman and CEO Robert B. Clasen said in a prepared statement. “It complements the home-video, television-production, animated-film, international-sales and other units that were combined with the Starz premium-channel business in August when Liberty Media purchased IDT Entertainment. Starz is now a fully integrated media company with the ability to produce any kind of programming and distribute that programming across all platforms.”

McGurk added in a prepared statement, “Unburdened by the infrastructure and red tape of big studios, Overture Films will provide a unique opportunity for creative talent to return to the fundamentals of filmmaking: original stories, gifted actors and innovative directors.”
