AT&T Dribbles Out U-verse TV in Houston

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 11/30/2006 10:40:00 AM MT

AT&T is now offering its U-verse TV service in limited areas of Houston, with plans to expand availability “on an ongoing basis,” the company announced Thursday.

Houston is the second market where AT&T is offering U-verse services commercially, following its June launch in San Antonio.

In October, AT&T executives said U-verse would become available in Houston in “late November,” with plans to cover a total of 15 markets by the end of 2006. That leaves the carrier 31 days in December to start turning up service in the other 13 metro areas it’s targeting, which AT&T still hasn’t named.

The company said it will soon begin direct marketing in areas where U-verse service is initially available.

As AT&T previously announced, the U-verse TV service in Houston will include HD channels. Initially, the service will carry more than 25 HD channels, which will be free for two months and $10 per month thereafter.

Earlier this week, AT&T made about 30 HD channels available to subscribers in San Antonio and announced that it has started deploying Motorola’s VIP1200-series set-top box in the area to support HD and other features.

U-verse TV's HD lineup includes ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD, NFL Network HD, HBO HD, Cinemax HD, Showtime HD, The Movie Channel HD, Starz HD, Discovery HD Theater, TNT HD, Universal HD, HDNet, HDNet Movies, A&E HD, HGTV HD, Food Network HD and National Geographic Channel HD.
