Voices From Everywhere On HDTV

Looks Bad, Less Filling

“DirecTV is one of the largest high-def providers in the world but alas, do they really provide true HD? Not really ever since they turned down the bit rate as of 2004 and now provide what is called around the Internet boards as HD-Lite. This unsavory flavor of high-def is still a good picture but not everything it could be and finally, someone is taking action … The stiff arm of justice will hopefully rule in favor of high-def lovers everywhere and we will keep you up to date as soon as we hear something.”

Matt Burns, www.engadgethd.com

More Than Just Digits

“Many consumers think all digital TV signals give them an HD picture. They don’t.”

David Lieberman, USA Today

Well-Received Receiver

“Comcast also compresses its signal, but because it travels through cables there is consensus among enthusiasts that Comcast’s HD picture is better… Also, there’s no question that Comcast’s all-in-one high-definition receiver/video recorder is better than DirecTV’s.”

Alex Goldfayn, Chicago Tribune

Too Close for Comfort

“Am I correct in thinking that the intensely intimate detail of HDTV is going to pose serious issues for the adult video industry? Blemishes and imperfections are bad enough, but when they start showing up in high detail on parts of the body that can barely stand a close-up anyway, even the hard-core audience may be turned off.”

Phillip Swan, TVPredictions.com

More Than Just a Game

“It used to be that the Super Bowl was the big event driving high-definition TV sales. But this holiday season, the debut of new video game consoles as well as falling prices are giving a broader group of consumers a reason to buy the newfangled TVs.”

Dean Takahashi, Mercury News Interactive, San Jose, Calif.

Full Steam Ahead

“We do not compress the signal beyond what the program provider gives us.”

Marilyn O’Connell, Verizon senior vice president for video solutions, discussing FiOS TV’s HDTV picture in The New York Times
