Showtime Networks plans to offer the first download-to-own video service for Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system, to be officially launched at the Consumer Electronics Show next week in Las Vegas.
Showtime expects to commercially launch the service in late January. It will allow consumers to download episodes from original series including Weeds, The L Word and Sleeper Cell and play them on their PCs, portable players or PC-connected TVs.
Pricing information on the Vista download service wasn’t available. However, Showtime offers several episodes on Apple Computer’s iTunes and Amazon.com’s Unbox for $1.99 apiece.
The pay TV channel is using ExtendMedia’s OpenCASE software to manage the video-content-download process with a Vista-compliant application.
