Animal Planet will replicate a British Broadcasting Corp. television hit with the near-real-time Spring Watch USA,while another series will debut on cable but continue with daily, five-minute Webisodes.
The season-focused series will be filmed within the week of broadcast each week, beginning April 15. Cameras will be poised over nests, in bear dens and other locations in North Carolina, Virginia and California, tracking species as they awake from hibernation. The six-week series will be hosted by Jeff Corwin, Vanessa Garnick, Philippe Cousteau Jr. and David Mizejewski.
Viewers will be able to interact on the series topic, tracking signs of the burgeoning spring in their own backyards and creating content to post on Animal Planet's Web site.
The Web component will also be a major part of Saving Grace,a series tracking the rehabilitation of a lost sea otter named Grace. The initial episode will be cablecast March 1 as a half-hour episode. For the rest of the month, the story will be updated daily with five-minute Webisodes until an on-air half-hour conclusion at the end of the month.
