MSNBC anchor Alison Stewart was tapped to host a Sundance Channel interstitial series that was to have been hosted by CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo, a network spokeswoman said.
Stewart will host ECOBIZ, sponsored by Citi Smith Barney and produced for Sundance by NBC Media Productions, the channel said Thursday. It’s part of Sundance ‘s The Green weekly environmental-programming primetime block.
NBC Universal owns a 30% stake in Sundance.
ECOBIZ is a series of two- to three-minute segments profiling individuals who have worked to establish more environmentally sustainable policies and eco-friendly business tactics while enhancing profits, the channel said.
Bartiromo’s hosting role became part of the controversy surrounding former Citibank executive Todd Thomson. According to published reports, Sundance offered Bartiromo the hosting role in The Green segments, and Bartiromo suggested that Thomson might facilitate sponsorship. Thomson -- who was fired in January -- ended up approving a $5 million sponsorship of the series, according to reports in Newsweek and elsewhere.
Stewart, who began her career at MTV News, hosts MSNBC daytime show The Most.
In other Sundance news, the network will debut select original programming from The Green on Apple’s iTunes.
The network said the first episode of new original series Big Ideas for a Small Planet is available via iTunes as a free download through April 17. Beginning April 18, episodes of the series can be purchased for $1.99 apiece. Or all 13 episodes and bonus footage can be purchased at a special Season Pass price of $19.99.
