By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 5/1/2007 8:18:00 AM

ESPN and TNT were the top cable-network winners at the April 30 Sports Emmy Awards, with each channel earning four statuettes.

ESPN had a multiple winner in made-for-cable movie One of a Kind: The Rise and Fall of Stu Ungar, which won two awards including the Dick Schaap writing award for scripter Al Szymanski.

Cable's other multiple winner was HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, which won two of the premium channel's three Sports Emmys.

TNT's awards were spread among its National Basketball Association and National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing coverage.

Overall, NBC was the top Sports Emmy winner, earning awards in nine of the 30 categories presented, including three wins for its coverage of the XX Winter Olympic Games.

ABC won four along with ESPN and TNT; HBO and Fox won three; and Being Stanley, CBS, ESPN.com, ESPN2, FSN, NASCAR Images, NFL Network and Race2replace.com each won one award.

The awards were selected by peer panels, who mulled over 700 entries in 30 categories. They recognized achievements during the 2006 calendar year.
