Verizon Licenses Gemstar-TV Guide IPG Patents

FiOS TV Pact Marks First Telco Deal for Gemstar-TV Guide

In Gemstar-TV Guide International’s first such deal with a telco TV provider, it signed a patent-licensing agreement with Verizon Communications for interactive program guides and related technology.

Under the agreement, the two companies will also jointly develop a solution to let Verizon’s FiOS TV customers remotely schedule recordings on their digital-video recorders using TV Guide’s listings.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

  It's good that Verizon recognized that their guide service was the weakest part of their FIOS TV service. Unfortunately, Verizon still uses FYI Television as the content provider for whichever guide they provide. FYI's guide info is almost comically inaccurate for a great many programs, and the programming information they do get right has been trimmed down to the point where it conveys no useful information.
