Looking for a broadband Internet product to compete with cable operators and telephone providers, DirecTV said it may test delivering high-speed-Internet service through broadband-over-power-line technology.
“We’re not the only ones talking to them,” DirecTV CEO Chase Carey said at the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in New York Monday, according to the news service. “I think you'll see some meaningful tests in this arena.”
DirecTV wants to test delivering broadband over power lines in a “top 50 city where you’re covering at least one-half of the city,” Carey said, according to Reuters.
Responding to talk that AT&T might be interested in eventually acquiring DirecTV rival EchoStar Communications, Carey said he wouldn’t be surprised by such a deal. “I can understand the logic. AT&T looked at DirecTV in 2003,” Carey said, according to Reuters.
