Verlander’s Gem Earns an 8.6 Household Rating in Detroit DMA

Tuesday night’s “no-no” for Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander had FSN Detroit screaming “Yes, yes!”
The 24-year-old flamethrower’s no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers scored big in Motown, with FSN Detroit catching an 8.6 household rating in the Detroit DMA, according to Nielsen Media Research data. Metro Detroit’s interest in the rare feat spilled over to the regional sports network’s postgame show, Tigers Live, which recorded an 8.3 rating.
FSN Detroit also expected solid ratings Wednesday as it replayed Verlander’s no-no, giving Tigers’ fans a chance to tune in, or record, the pitcher’s magic night, according to director of media relations Tim Bryant.
Bryant added that other FSN networks across the country picked up the end of the no-hitter Tuesday night, showing a shortly delayed version during other baseball games. ESPN also aired the ninth inning of the game.
Verlander’s no-hitter is just another tip of the cap for FSN Detroit with the Tigers this season. The defending American League champions have averaged a 6.2 household rating in the Detroit DMA, according to network officials. That represents a 27% increase from last year’s 4.5 mark.
The network has experienced tremendous success -- the club averaged a 4.5 mark during the 2006 season -- due to the recent turnaround of the Tigers’ losing ways.
“The Tigers have been a sleeping baseball giant for many years now,” Bryant said, adding that this year’s ratings upturn has been more predictable. “They are the defending American League champs and have shown that they will be contenders; attendance has been way up.”
