WOW Picks Motorola VOD Servers

B-1 to Power Deployments in Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, June 19, 2007

Orlando, Fla. -- WideOpenWest selected Motorola's B-1 video-on-demand servers to supply VOD service to customers in its Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, markets.

WOW vice president of engineering Gary Nilsen said the operator picked the B-1 -- which streams content from dynamic random-access memory, rather than disk -- based on its performance.

"Scalability is critical as VOD popularity grows, and [the B-1] gives us the option of offering advanced services to our subscribers," Nilsen said in a press release.

The B-1 VOD server was originally developed by Broadbus Technologies, which Motorola acquired last year.

Motorola announced in April that it has shipped servers representing 500,000 video streams deployed in less than three years.
