AMC ordered up eight episodes of one-hour original drama show Breaking Bad from writer/producer/director Vince Gilligan (TheX-Files).

The series, set to debut in 2008, follows the story of a chemistry teacher turned drug trafficker, struggling to secure his family’s financial future after being diagnosed with only two years to live.

Breaking Bad stars Emmy Award-nominated actor Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle, Little Miss Sunshine), Aaron Paul (Mission: Impossible III), Anna Gunn (Deadwood), Dean Norris (Little Miss Sunshine), Betsy Brandt (CSI) and RJ Mitte (Hannah Montana, Weeds).

The series will be executive-produced by Gilligan and Mark Johnson of High Bridge Productions and Gran Via Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.

“With the series pickup, AMC is demonstrating that they're serious about producing provocative, quality original programming, and we're extremely happy to be working with them,” said Zack VanAmburg, co-president of programming and production at SPT.

The network first entered the original-programming arena last year with award-winning miniseries Broken Trail. The effort continued this week with the premiere of an original scripted dramatic series, Mad Men, Matthew Weiner’s first project since The Sopranos.
