Steroids Found in Benoit’s Home

Police Say WWE Star Asphyxiated Wife, Son

By Steve Donohue -- Multichannel News, 6/26/2007 12:03:00 PM

Police found anabolic steroids in the home of World Wrestling Entertainment star Chris Benoit, who they say murdered his wife and son before hanging himself over the weekend.

The steroids were one of several prescribed medications investigators found in the home of Benoit, Fayette County, Ga., Sheriff’s Department Lt. Tommy Pope said during a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Pope said police believe Benoit choked his wife, Nancy, to death Friday night in an upstairs family room before asphyxiating his seven-year-old son, Daniel, in the boy’s upstairs bedroom Saturday morning.

Investigators said Benoit hung himself in his basement weight room Saturday afternoon, using the cord of a weight machine that contained a pulley.

Nancy, who was wrapped in a towel, was found with her wrists and feet bound, police said in a press conference broadcast live nationally on Fox News Channel, CNN and MSNBC. Police also found bibles that Benoit apparently placed next to the bodies of his wife and son.

WWE confirmed Benoit’s death Monday night , shortly before it was scheduled to run its live WWE Rawprogram on USA Network.

The incident prompted WWE chairman Vince McMahon -- who staged his own death two weeks ago in a televised automobile explosion -- to break from the story line and take to the air. WWE Raw dedicated its entire program to a tribute to Benoit Monday night.

Benoit -- who worked previously for Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling before it was acquired by WWE -- joined McMahon’s company in 2000.

Nancy also worked on-air for WCW as a wrestling manager.
