BBC Global News will use the media-publishing system from Comcast’s thePlatform to distribute short-form video clips to YouTube.
The British broadcaster in March inked a deal with YouTube to provide three branded channels on the video-sharing site, including the BBC Global News channel.
Initially, the BBC will use thePlatform’s mpsConnect service to update its news section on YouTube, which provides up to 30 news clips per day gathered from 250 correspondents worldwide.
“thePlatform gives us a publishing system for delivering our content while maintaining our required business controls,” BBC Global News Development senior vice president Michele Grant said in a prepared statement.
The mpsConnect service ingests video files and transcodes them into different formats, while tracking usage permissions for multiple partners. Previously, BBC was uploading video to YouTube manually. The deal is thePlatform’s first such deal to provide syndicated video content to YouTube.
Other customers of Seattle-based thePlatform include ABC News, CNBC, CSTV, Court TV, Comcast, Oxygen and Verizon Wireless.
