Comcast, Knology Hear the Gospel

Gospel Music Channel Launches on Several Systems

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 6/28/2007 8:35:00 AM

Continuing its push toward its goal of counting 20 million subscribers by year-end, Gospel Music Channel recorded recent launches with systems owned by Comcast and Knology.

The service, dedicated around-the-clock to gospel music, is now available to Comcast digital subscribers in Houston and Paducah, Ken., and to Knology customers in Huntsville, Ala., Augusta and Columbus, Ga., and Charleston, S.C., according to network officials.

The aforementioned system launches are the most recent in a series of other major distribution announcements made by Gospel across the past several months.

In April, the network became available in more than 60 new markets including New York; Los Angeles; Miami; Philadelphia; Dallas; Boston; San Francisco; San Diego; Minneapolis; Tampa, Fla.; St. Louis; Denver and others in replacing Black Family Channel.

Indeed, Gospel Music made a major subscriber leap when it finalized an agreement that shifted 16 million BFC subscribers to its roster. Through the transaction -- which effectively shut down the six-year-old BFC linear network -- Gospel added about 10 million subscribers due to carriage duplication of around 6 million in a number of markets that housed both services.

In May, Gospel also rolled onto Cox Communications systems in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla., and Charter Communications’ unit in Fort Worth, Texas.

Gospel officials said they expect the service to count 20 million subscribers by the close of 2007.
