Former SportsCenter host Dan Patrick is leaving the sports-media machine after his ESPN Radio broadcast Friday, Aug. 17, the network said.
Patrick said in a release that he told ESPN he wanted to leave and was “grateful to ESPN for its willingness to allow me to pursue new endeavors.”
Patrick has hosted an ESPN Radio show since 1999 and done National Basketball Association host duties on ABC (owned, like ESPN, by Disney). He was a SportsCenter anchor from 1989-2006 after coming to ESPN from CNN, and he writes for ESPN-The Magazine.
From his SportsCenter days, he became known for using the catchphrase “en fuego,” as a substitute for “on fire,” and for introducing the show with longtime SportsCenter co-host Keith Olbermann by saying, “Welcome to the big show.”
