Voices From Everywhere On Showtime

Life Imitates Art
“It makes total sense that Showtime would be the TV network that would spend five years cajoling the creator of This American Life to make a video version of radio’s quirkiest and most original program. After all, This American Life, with its leisurely storytelling and decidedly anti-establishment point of view, could never have found its way to commercial radio. And Showtime doesn’t air commercials.”

Popularity Isn’t Everything
“The real issue has to do with subscriptions, which determine how broad an audience a show will get. Showtime has less of an audience than HBO. HBO has won lots of awards, but it doesn’t mean Showtime is not as good. They (HBO) just have more subscribers.”

Matching Up
“This was a year when Showtime shined qualitywise with two extremely well acted and well produced shows in Sleeper Cell: American Terror, and even more so Dexter. Dexter is going to be all over the Emmys, and while HBO had The Wire and [The] Sopranos, I feel that Showtime really jumped forward this season into being in the same class as HBO, or even better.”
Donald Wisniewski, Don’s Television Awardshttp://donawards.blogspot.com/
Domination Is Done
“The Sopranos is gone, Deadwood is all but over (four lousy hours to go), so my question is, is HBO still worth it? I could do a lot better seeing theatrical films if I gave my money to Netflix or Blockbuster. One or two decent shows doesn’t seem like great value. Especially when FX is putting on shows like The Shield, The Riches and Rescue Me for the price of basic cable.”

Out of the Shadows
“Rival Showtime, which toiled for years in HBO’s shadow, has recently gotten much better. The channel is home to Weeds, one of the best shows on television. David Duchovny’s new program Californication also looks interesting. Given a choice, I bet many viewers would keep the Viacom pay channel over HBO.”
