DOCSIS 3.0 Gets Further ITU Approvals

International Telecommunication Union Also Approves Aspects of PacketCable 2.0

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 7/16/2007 8:26:00 AM

The International Telecommunication Union, which establishes worldwide standards for communications technologies, issued several approvals related to Cable Television Laboratories’ Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification 3.0 at a meeting in Singapore last month.

The approvals, or “consents,” by ITU Study Group 9 will lead to international standardization of DOCSIS 3.0, according to CableLabs.

At the meeting, the group also approved key aspects of CableLabs’ PacketCable 2.0 specification.

The ITU previously agreed to adopt four specs related to DOCSIS 3.0 at a technical meeting in Tokyo in October.

The DOCSIS 3.0 feature of most interest to operators is channel bonding, which provides greater upstream and downstream bandwidth than existing cable-modems -- for example, 160 megabits per second downstream by combining four separate channels.

Singapore is home to StarHub, one of the first service providers in the world to deploy pre-standardized DOCSIS 3.0 equipment. StarHub currently offers customers broadband speeds of 100 mbps using gear from Motorola and Vyyo.

The ITU’s Study Group 9 governs “Integrated Broadband Cable Table Networks and Television and Sound Transmission” standards to meet market needs for use of cable networks around the world. The group is chaired by CableLabs CEO Dick Green.
