By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 7/19/2007 7:22:00 AM

Cable produced the top three vote-getters in the 59th Annual Emmy Awards, with those programs (Bury My Heart at Wounded Kneeand The Sopranoson HBO and Broken Trailon AMC) responsible for 48 of 219 nominations for programs distributed on cable.

HBO was the top cable nominee, but kudos were spread across 22 networks. Other double-digit-earning networks included AMC, Comedy Central, Disney Channel, Showtime, TNT and USA Network.

As expected, the recently ended Sopranos got a big send-off from viewers, earning 15 nominations for its final season. That brings the nomination tally to 111 throughout the life of the series. But Emmy watchers noted that it will have to break new ground again to win: No drama series has ever captured the award after it has ceased production. To date, the series has won 18 Emmy Awards.

But the top nominee in all of television was Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, with 17. Next highest was Broken Trail with 16, then The Sopranos.

Other multiple nominees include The Starter Wife, earning 10 for USA; HBO's Entourage, including competitive nominations for Jeremy Piven and Kevin Dillon; Discovery Channel HD miniseries Planet Earth; HBO's Rome; and Comedy’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewartwith six.

The cable award count includes 86 for HBO; AMC with 18; Showtime with 17; Discovery with 16; Comedy and USA with 12 each; TNT with 11; Bravo with nine (including Top Chefand Project Runwaycompeting for best reality competition show); The History Channel and Sci Fi Channel each with seven; Disney with four; Cartoon Network, FX and Nickelodeon with three each; A&E Network, Animal Planet and Lifetime Television (including best TV movie nominee Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy) with two each; and Hallmark Channel, National Geographic Channel, Oxygen, Starz and TCM with one each.
