NAB: Feb. 17, 2009, Means Nothing to 60% of Consumers

Broadcasters’ Trade Group: Most People Unaware of Digital-TV Switch

By Jason Braff -- Multichannel News, 7/20/2007 10:51:00 AM

Are you ready for the switch?

Wait, what?

The National Association of Broadcasters reportedly found that 60% of consumers are not aware of the Feb. 17, 2009, government mandate that will have all TV stations make the switch to digital.

For the 20 million households in the United States -- or 15% of the population that owns a television -- that use televisions broadcasting in analog, buying a digital converter box or switching to a digital signal will be mandatory by the deadline, or else they can expect a snowy television season.

The federal government is giving the nondigital households a break by providing two $40 coupons to each household so that they can purchase digital converters, which are expected to cost anywhere from $50-$70, according to Consumers Union.
