Debut of AMC’s Mad Men Pulls a 1.4

Original-Series Production Up 75% vs. Cable Network’s Time-Slot Average

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 7/20/2007 1:30:00 PM

The premiere of AMC’s Mad Men scored a 1.4 household overnight rating, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

AMC’s first original-series production -- an examination of the go-go days of Madison Avenue, circa 1960, from The Sopranos executive producer and writer Matt Weiner -- outpointed the network’s 10 p.m. time-slot average of 0.8 by 75%, network officials said.

“We’re really pleased. It’s been a great week for us here with the premiere of Mad Men and the Emmy nominations for Broken Trail,” Rainbow Media Holdings spokesman Matt Frankel said, noting that due to reprocessing issues, no other Nielsen data were available.

Trailing only HBO’s Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee’s 17, Western miniseries Broken Trail earned AMC 16 Emmy nominations, including nods for best miniseries and the work of stars Robert Duvall, Thomas Haden Church and Greta Scacchi.

It was the record-setting performance of Broken Trail in June 2006 that led the way for AMC to push into scripted-series production for the first time. The network is a co-producer of Hustle with the British Broadcasting Corp.
