Detroit-Area Subscribers Getting Refunds from Comcast

Digital-Cable Customers Allegedly Double-Billed on Monthly Maintenance Charge for Seven Years

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 7/24/2007 5:45:00 AM MT

About 200,000 Detroit-area customers who were allegedly double-billed by Comcast for a monthly maintenance charge for up to seven years will receive refunds that could total $2 million, AP reported.

The refunds will settle a federal class-action lawsuit brought on by digital-cable subscribers who were also charged 99 cents per month for "cable guard service," Detroit lawyer Peter Macuga, who represented the subscribers, told AP, adding that the proposed settlement must be completed by a federal judge in Detroit.

The most any one subscriber can receive as a credit on their bill or a refund is just over $80, according to AP.

Comcast admitted no wrongdoing in agreeing to the proposed settlement, and spokesman Jerome Espy told AP subscribers are receiving a notice about the proposed settlement with their July invoices.
