Six Feet Under producer Alan Ball will develop a supernatural drama series for Home Box Office set to premiere in 2008.
The series, dubbed True Blood -- based on the Southern Vampire series of books written by Charlaine Harris -- follows the lives of vampires surviving off of Japanese-made synthetic blood who settle into a small town in Louisiana. Stephen Moyer (The Starter Wife) stars as a vampire who falls in love with a waitress played by Anna Paquin (X-Men: The Last Stand) who has unusual powers of her own.
The project is part of an exclusive two-year production deal reached in 2005 between Ball and the network.
“It’s an absolute pleasure to continue our relationship with Alan Ball,” said HBO president of entertainment Carolyn Strauss in a statement. "True Blood proves that Alan continues as a master of his craft.”
