NBCU Sets Olympian HD Effort

By Steve Donohue -- Multichannel News, 8/12/2007 8:00:00 PM

NBC Universal will shoot more than 3,600 hours of coverage at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The company's most extensive coverage yet of the Olympics will go around the clock across myriad platforms, including live streaming for the first time, from Aug. 8 to 24, 2008.

Broadcaster NBC will present live swimming, gymnastics and beach volleyball in U.S. primetime despite the 12-hour time differential from China and this nation's East Coast, while cable cousins USA Network, MSNBC and CNBC will also present extensive linear lineups.

NBCU's Olympics programming will also be available in high-definition on NBC broadcast affiliates, USA HD and Universal HD. Telemundo will run Spanish-language Olympics programming.

Internet coverage of the Olympics includes more than 2,200 hours of live streaming broadband video coverage on NBCOlympics.com. Plans about wireless coverage are expected to be announced at a later date.

NBCU officials said the company's 3,600 total hours of coverage triples its previous record of 1,210 hours of coverage at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Moreover, the sum is 1,000 more than the total of 2,562 for every televised Summer Olympics in U.S. history, dating back to the 20 hours CBS devoted to the Games in Rome in 1960 through NBC's presentation four years ago.
