Sprint Eyes $2.5B From WiMax in 2010

Company Details Projections for WiMax Service With Clearwire

By Steve Donohue -- Multichannel News, 8/16/2007 6:31:00 AM

Sprint Nextel said it expects to generate between $2 billion and $2.5 billion in revenue from selling WiMax broadband services in fiscal year 2010.

The company, which detailed projections Thursday for new WiMax broadband wireless services it plans to market with Craig McCaw’s Clearwire, said it expects to invest $2.5 billion in capital for WiMax through the end of 2008.

Sprint said it would need to spend an additional $2.5 billion to reach 125 million people with WiMax services by 2010.

Through the network sharing deal Sprint announced with Clearwire in July, Sprint expects the network buildout to reach 100 million people by the end of 2008 with Sprint providing coverage to 70 million and Clearwire to 30 million people.

With plans to reach 125 million people with its coverage by the end of 2010, Sprint said the “potential market would include an estimated 48 million U.S. households, nearly 5 million small office/home office subscribers and more than 130 million consumer electronics devices.”
