Dean Brought Viewers to The Weather Channel

Network Posts Best Ratings of 2007

By Kent Gibbons -- Multichannel News, 8/21/2007 10:28:00 AM

The Weather Channel said its weekend ratings (storm) surged even though Hurricane Dean did not directly threaten the U.S. mainland. (It came ashore early Monday at Costa Maya, Mexico.)

The total day (3 a.m.-3 a.m.) rating for Saturday, Aug. 18, was 0.4. As Hurricane Dean strengthened, the total day (3 a.m.-3 a.m.) rating for Sunday, Aug. 19 was a 0.6 rating, a relatively high number considering the storm was not expected to directly hit the United States, the channel said.

The Landmark Communications-owned network averaged a 0.2 household rating (222,000 viewers), according to Nielsen Media Research data supplied by Disney.

Sunday’s performance marks the highest rated day for The Weather Channel in 2007. The peak quarter hour viewing occurred at 10 a.m. with a 1.2 household rating, or 1.1 million homes. On Sunday, The Weather Channel ranked No. 1 among all news and information cable networks in the A25-54 demographic, the network said.
