Sundance Takes Flight On Virgin America

Airline Startup Pact Provides Passengers With Programming Sneak Peek

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 8/28/2007 6:45:00 AM

For an in-flight TV offering, airline startup Virgin America has done a deal with Sundance Channel, which includes a sneak peek at programming before it debuts on the network.

The agreement, network officials said, creates a custom in-flight “channel,” and also provides a host of bold content for Virgin America’s Inflight Entertainment System, Red.

Sundance Channel for Virgin America, features a collection of independent feature films and documentaries, as well as original programming from several of the network’s hit series. That includes a sneak preview of the first two episodes of the Sundance Channel original series Nimrod Nation from Oscar-nominated director Brett Morgen. The Nimrod Nation installments will be available on Virgin America beginning on Nov. 1, three weeks prior to the Nov. 26premiere on Sundance.

Exclusively programmed for the airline, Sundance Channel for Virgin America will allow passengers access to the best independent content at the touch of their nine-inch seatback screens.

“Sundance Channel is excited to make this custom offering available on Virgin America’s Red this month,” Kirk Iwanowski, Sundance’s executive vice president of  marketing, branded entertainment and sponsorship said in a statement. “We’re always looking for innovative ways to showcase our content and Virgin America’s Red certainly delivers that opportunity – Virgin is a brand with great attitude and altitude.”

Virgin America features 18 satellite TV channels on demand, 25 pay-per-view movies, videogames, over 3,000 music files, and an “on-board” chat feature and food when passengers want it.
