MTV has given the go-ahead for a new show chronicling the lives of student working on a high school newspaper in Weston, Fla.
Produced by the award-winning MTV News and Docs unit, The Paper is scheduled to commence an eight-episode run in the first quarter of 2008, according to network officials.
The show will look at The Circuit, the newspaper operated and managed by journalism students at Cypress Bay High School, which counts some 5,400 students making it the biggest secondary school in the Sunshine State. The Circuit has won numerous journalism awards, including several at the Florida Scholastic Press Association Convention and the best overall designation in 2004 and 2005 by the Sun-Sentinel (the major newspaper of Broward and South Palm Beach counties).
“With The Paper we dive into a rarely seen side of high school life -- showcasing the dynamic and surprisingly intense life of students working on their high school newspaper,” said Dave Sirulnick, EVP MTV News and Docs in a statement. “MTV has always been about reflecting the lives and interests of our audience and The Paper is a perfect example. The compelling and fiercely competitive personalities of these student journalists prove that the news doesn't stop -- even in high school.”
