Sports Center West?

ESPN Eyes Los Angeles Edition of Flagship Show

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 8/30/2007 9:20:00 AM

Bristol, Conn. -- A Los Angeles-based edition of ESPN’s flagship show, Sports Center could be in the offing, as the total sports network will begin operating a production facility in the city’s downtown area in 2009.

The facility will sit atop an ESPN Zone restaurant.

ESPN also plans to shoot the 1 a.m. edition of Sports Center from the Los Angeles studio by mid-2009, said Mark Gross, senior vice president and managing editor of studio production.

ESPN officials, speaking at a Media Day event here, said no firm decision about Sports Center had been made, but something was definitely being considered. In addition, ESPN president George Bodehneimer said the facility could provide a home for ESPN Deportes TV, radio and magazine arms.

ESPN executive vice president of content John Skipper said the operation would give ESPN more access to west coast talent and expand the company’s scope, which some have labeled as being too northeast skewed.

Executives also said that the ESPYs would be held at the Nokia Theater, also located in Los Angeles, near the Staples Center.
