Telemundo Ratings Tower With Futbol

Brazil/Mexico Lifts Spanish-Language Broadcaster To Record NTI Numbers

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 9/14/2007 9:35:00 AM

Telemundo scored record rating with its live telecast of the Mexico/Brazil soccer match on Sept. 12.

The international friendly averaged 2.88 million viewers, 2 million of which were adults 18 to 49. Officials said both of those numbers represented best-ever marks for Telemundo since the Spanish-language network, which is the official broadcaster of the Mexican national soccer side, switched over to the Nielsen Television Index in February. Gauged on a cume base – viewers tuning in for at least one minute –the match also netted record numbers relative to unduplicated total watchers (6.5 million) and with the aforementioned demo (4.3 million)

Moreover, the “Rumbo Al Mundial” game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. won 3-1 by Brazil, was also the highest-rated match in the network's NTI measurement history among males 18 to 49 (1.43 million), adults 18 to 34 (1.1 million) and men 18 to 34 (765,000).

According to NHSI ratings, the Mexico vs. Brazil match delivered higher ratings among adults 18 to 49 than Univision in Los Angeles (an 8.2 rating to 2.4 against that group) and Chicago (10.9 to 10.3). Among Hispanic men 18 to 49, the game was also the leader in Los Angeles (11.4), New York (9.2) and Chicago (13.5).

Owned by NBC Universal, Telemundo reaches 93% of U.S. Hispanic households in 142 markets through its 16 owned-and-operated stations, 43 broadcast affiliates and nearly 700 cable affiliates.
