Weather Channel To Make Grand Central Wireless

Service Promotes Network’s ‘Epic Conditions’ Series

By Tom Steinert-Threlkeld -- Multichannel News, 9/19/2007 3:34:00 PM

The Weather Channel will bring free wireless access to the Internet to the main transportation hub of midtown Manhattan for one year, beginning Oct. 1.

The channel will provide the wireless service to the ground level and subterranean train levels of Grand Central Terminal, as part of a marketing campaign for its program “Epic Conditions,” a series that debuted in March and chronicles the collision of world-class athletes with extreme weather.

“It’s all about freedom,” said Weather Channel general manager Wonya Y. Lucas Wednesday evening at the Walter Kaitz Foundation Fundraising Dinner at the Hilton New York Hotel. Freedom to carry on activities, inside or outside, in whatever weather conditions exist.

The connection to the “Epic Conditions” program will be made clear in signage throughout the terminal, said Debora J. Wilson, the president of The Weather Channel. Signs will appear on table tops on the dining level of the terminal, she said; but not on garbage cans on train platforms. The channel is also not planning to shine any kind of promotional messages on the ceiling of the terminal, she said.

Neither Wilson nor Lucas disclosed the cost of providing the free wireless access to computer users, inside the terminal and on trains departing the station.

Roughly 500,000 people pass through Grand Central Terminal daily, for trains, subway rides, shopping and dining.
