Staying True to the Mission

The Cable Hall of Fame celebrates its 10th anniversary, and The Cable Center marks its sixth year of hosting the annual Hall of Fame induction in Denver. They have become closely linked since 1998. Cable Center CEO Larry Satkowiak spoke to Multichannel News contributor Craig Kuhl about the Center’s vision, mission and some of its core programs, including the Hall of Fame. An edited transcript follows:
MCN: What is The Cable Center’s role with the Hall of Fame?
Larry Satkowiak:The Hall of Fame is the significant fundraising event for The Cable Center. The Cable Center was founded by cable pioneers, and the Hall of Fame event stems from the pioneers’ group.
The event honors the men and women who have made significant contributions to our industry. It’s appropriate to take a moment to reflect and celebrate their accomplishments and achievements.
MCN: Cable Days is a new event for the Center. How did it come about?
LS: It came from a combination of events. We invite cable executives to the panel discussions since many will be here for either the Center’s board meeting or the Hall of Fame.
We can keep the costs down and do some interesting work at the same time.
MCN: Has the Cable Center’s mission changed in the past year?
LS: We approved a strategic plan in April of 2006 and continue to work on initiatives directed by the board. We have formed closer bonds with the academic community across the U.S. All of our offerings now have the higher education community as an integral part of the program. However, we continue to look for new opportunities and partners.
MCN: What are the core programs and initiatives at the Center?
LS: There are five major initiatives we will pursue in 2007: the Cable Mavericks program; the distance learning program with C-SPAN; professional development and training for the cable industry; the Cox [Communications] customer care initiative, including the academic chair and MBA program; and the Hall of Fame.
MCN: What are some key programs the industry should look for in the future from the Center?
LS: We are exploring the addition of new exhibits [and] expanded offerings such as professional development for the cable industry, and [we’re] expanding some of our current programs, such as the Cable Mavericks program.
We are very focused on the $10 million Chairman’s Campaign. After its completion, we look forward to working with our partners to achieve the mission of the Cable Center.
I think we’re still in the early innings, and that there is a bright and prosperous future as we strive to reach our full potential.
