Comcast has started rolling out on-demand video services to digital cable customers in Houston on the system acquired from Time Warner Cable.
The rollout began last week in the Bear Creek area with additional communities being rolled out through the end of the year. Comcast touts the availability of 150 hours of HD content, an assortment of movies and some primetime hits on demand, including CBS and ABC series CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, Survivor and Desperate Housewives.
In all, Comcast says it offers up to 9,300 programs a month on demand. Time Warner Cable -- which swapped the Houston system to Comcast in exchange for systems in Texas, the Kansas City area and New Mexico -- offered a more limited VOD offering of about 3,000 programs, Comcast officials said.
The Houston system has about 750,000 basic cable subscribers.
When Comcast began offering services in the Houston market in June, it added close to 20 new networks, including five HD channels, and later raised cable rates.
