Operators Complete California Systems Swap

Charter Beefs Up Southern California Presence, As Wave Builds Sacramento Base

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 11/2/2007 9:32:00 AM

Charter Communications and WaveDivision have completed system swaps aimed at building the operators' clusters in the Golden State

The trade enables Charter to boost its presence in Los Angeles area via systems serving some 14,200 video customers in Ventura and Cerritos, Calif. In return, WaveDivision, which had launched telephone services in those southern California communities, receives Charter’s system serving 19,000 video subscribers in western Sacramento.

With the close of the transaction, Wave Broadband, the Seattle-based operator run by industry veteran Steve Weed, lifts its subscriber base to approximately 145,000 in three clusters: Seattle, San Francisco and West Sacramento.

With the addition of the Ventura and Cerritos system -- the latter which Wave acquired from Knology Broadband in 2005, after previously being owned by Verizon Communications -- Charter now has over 420,000 customers in southern California, according to operator officials.
